Bird Toons

A collection of New Yorker-style cartoons featuring birds paired with dry, slightly absurd musings—equal parts avian observation and existential humor.

Each cartoon highlights a different bird species, subtly weaving in identifying traits and behaviors, making it both entertaining and educational. I'm putting together a hardcover edition with a curated set of around 50 cartoons—designed to be equal parts field guide and coffee table companion, perfect for bird lovers, humor enthusiasts, and the bird-curious alike.

Bird Tunes

A musical project that starts with the call of a specific bird—say, a chickadee—and builds an original composition around it. I use the bird’s rhythm, tone, or melodic phrasing as a seed for inspiration, then layer in instrumentation to create a full piece. I play piano, guitar, bass, and drums, composing and recording each part myself to shape a cohesive soundscape. The bird recordings are left untouched—no adjustments to tempo or pitch—preserving the authenticity of the source and allowing the natural phrasing to lead the musical direction. The result is a kind of collaboration with nature, where the bird's song becomes the lead motif in an evolving musical story.

Firnature

A series of furniture pieces I’ve designed and built using simple, sturdy Douglas fir 2x lumber. Originally conceived as a project anyone could take on with just a miter saw, a drill, and easy-to-find lumber, it’s grown into a full collection of functional, sculptural pieces. The series now includes an L-shaped daybed couch, a double-sided bench-guest bed hybrid, desks, a dining table, bed frames, buffets, piano stands, shelves, and nightstands—each one guided by clean geometry, honest materials, and approachability in both form and construction.  I collaborated on this project with saint.studio—her vision and craftsmanship are integral to the design throughout.

Eric M Suhl Foundation Logo

I had the honor of designing the logo for the Eric M. Suhl Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting the lives of those suffering with Crohn's and colitis and mental health issues.

The logo is built around Eric’s initials—E M S—and draws visual inspiration from fishing out on the water, watching the sunset—something he loved to do.

There’s also an alternate version of the logo used for the Foundation’s annual golf tournament in Houston, redesigned to resemble a golf ball on a tee. It pays tribute to Eric’s love of the game and the spirit of the event held in his memory—an event that has raised over $600,000 in its nine years since founding.

Locus Energy Solar T-shirts

While at Locus Energy, I designed a series of solar-themed T-shirts as part of our annual conference marketing efforts. What began as a small giveaway quickly became a signature hit—attendees sought them out year after year. Each design featured playful interpretations of solar generation charts blended with themes tied to weather conditions or the host city. The shirts helped create a recognizable, lighthearted brand presence in a technical space and gave us a fun way to connect with our audience beyond the booth.  For example, the image shown captures the impact of a total solar eclipse on energy generation—an event I witnessed firsthand and featured in our t-shirt series in 2017.

3x3 Hanukkiah

I designed a series of Hanukkah menorahs, or Hanukkiahs, in collaboration with saint.studio, reimagining the traditional 9-candle form as a minimalist 3x3 grid. We were drawn to the simplicity and symmetry of the square layout and found a playful ritual in choosing which pattern to light each night. The design balances tradition with a sense of creative exploration.

Thunderbird House Postcards

This set of Thunderbird House postcards was created as a small takeaway for guests staying at the home, tucked in the forested mountains east of Albuquerque. Designed to reflect the spirit of the place, the cards are available for guests to send to friends or take home as a simple reminder of their time in the mountains.

ABQ Golf Yardage Books

I designed and produced a set of golf yardage books for the four city courses in Albuquerque. Each book was field-tested and refined through multiple rounds of play to create an accurate, useful reflection of the course as it’s experienced on the ground. The books combine clear, intentional graphic design with practical durability: printed on waterproof paper and spiral-bound for long-term use on the course.

Cibola Forest Trail Map

During the summer of 2020, I hiked and GPS-tracked every trail in my local area, designing a simple, reusable trail map to share with neighbors and friends. The map highlights distances, popular routes, and includes connector trails I mapped from our house through the forest, linking into the existing network—turning personal exploration into a community resource.

Modular Prefab Home

I designed a modular, sustainable home as part of a 2011 architecture studio focused on the Solar Decathlon. The house was conceived to be easily shipped on standard semi-trucks, with prefabricated modules that could be efficiently transported and assembled. At the heart of the design was an inventive staircase core that served both as the physical connector between modules and the central conduit for all utilities. The modular system allowed the home to expand seamlessly—from a 1-bedroom, 1-bath layout to a 4-bedroom, 2-bath configuration—offering flexibility without sacrificing simplicity or performance.

NPS Ranch Brands

Another collaboration with saint.studio, this collection of designed ranch brands celebrates each of the National Parks we visited. Inspired by the unique character of each park and the experiences we had there, the project became a graphic design exploration—translating landscapes and memories into a cohesive visual series that honors the diversity and spirit of the National Park system.
